Establishment of, and running, a comprehensive organic seed information database and communication network OF0195 Organic Eprints
Kerr, Simon.
The Scientific Objectives 1. To request and collate information from seed companies and organic sector certification bodies throughout the EU on the production of organic seed. Regular Organic Seed Working Group meetings were held throughout this period and information on EU regulations and techniques of organic seed production discussed and minuted on COSI. 2. To produce an up-to-date list of organic seed availability of varieties of field vegetable, cereals and potatoes within the EU. Where possible the list will provide an indication of seed quantity as well as variety availability. Contact was made with all seed companies and lists compiled of varieties available as organic seed. Over 1000 varieties were eventually added to the European...

Varieties for Organic Production and Marketing (OF0110) Organic Eprints
NIAB,.
This study aimed to study varieties of cabbage, carrots, parsnips, potatoes and swedes under organic conditions and to determine significant factors in the organic production systems that affect variety performance. Additional investigations were carried out with potatoes to study the effects of blight and potato cyst nematode. All trials were conducted on UKROFS registered sites and to appropriate organic husbandry standards. Measurements and assessments followed guidelines used for conventional trials, with quality criteria being based upon the requirements of the retail trade. Any assessment of colour and shape would be in line with established charts and descriptions. Results of the study will provide advice and recommendations to organic growers for...

Strategies for controlling seed-borne diseases in cereals and possibilities for reducing fungiside seed treatments Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Bent; Borgen, Anders; Nielsen, Ghita; Shceel, Christiane.
In the short term there is no useful alternative to chemical seed treatment for controlling the important seed-borne diseases in cereals. The only way to secure high quality seed is by discarding seed lots which have more than a specified level of disease. Without any other effective control measure than seed treatment large quantities of cereal seeds would be expected to be discarded. Another reduction model might be a differentiated use of seed treatments in the different certified seed generations. An important condition for the models is a representative seed test which for the moment only is possible in spring cereals. The threshold levels for the different diseases should under these circumstances be re-evaluated. In the long term other measurements...

Perennial survival of common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in soil under modern farming practice Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
Three years of field trials in Denmark have shown that common bunt (Tilletia tritici) is able to infect wheat in crop rotations with several intercrops between susceptible crops. This contradicts most previous literature which concluded that common bunt is a seed-borne pathogen only able to infect through the soil in cases where wheat is grown in two consecutive years. It is argued that the reason for this change in pathogenicity can be explained by a change in farming practice

Hvedens stinkbrand - en udfordring for principperne for økologisk jordbrug Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
I afhandlingen gengives 6 eksperimentelle...

Control of seed borne diseases in production of organic cereals Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Bent; Borgen, Anders; Kristensen, Lars.
In production of organic seed it is important to have some control measures on seed borne diseases to avoid propagation and spread of serious diseases. Due to lack of acceptable treatment methods the only way for the moment is to discard seed lots with unacceptable infections. Experiments have been started to find new and alternative methods for controlling seed borne diseases. In spring barley the results show good effect with 5% acetic acid on leaf stripe (Pyrenophora graminea) but problems with unacceptable effects on seed germination have to be solved. The old method with hot water treatment can be used and the results indicate good results against leaf stripe using water at 55°C. The effect of hot water was enhanced by first soaking the seeds in water...

Seed borne diseases - a challenge for organic cereal production Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Kristensen, Lars.
Seed borne diseases are to be considered serious in organic agriculture, and direct seed treatment methods will some times be necessary. Hot water treatment, mustard extracts and acetic acid can provide efficient control methods. Discussions on the feasibility of the different methods in organic agriculture is needed.

Biological control of common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in organic farming Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Davanlou, Mehrnaz.
Common bunt (Tilletia tritici syn. T. caries) is a significant seed borne plant disease in organic agriculture. General measures in ecological crop protection like crop rotation and manuring practice has in practice failed to control this disease, and direct seed treatment therefore seems to be necessary to ensure yield and food quality. Current study indicate that biological control can give successful control without negative effects on seed germination vigour. A combination of biocontrol agents and milk powder improves the effect of the biocontrol. Application of compost to the soil increases the frequency of this disease. The potential role of biocontrol within the principles of ecological disease management is being discussed.

Varieties of Field Vegetables and Potatoes for Organic Production and Marketing (OFO142) Organic Eprints
NIAB,.
Varities of six vegetable crops and potatoes were evaluated in organic situations grown in replicated field trials on UKROFS organic sites. In most cases the results differed from those which would have been obtained in conventional trials as there was no chemical protection against pests and diseases and lower levels of available nutrients. Organic seed was used were available and a comparison made of the performance of this against conventional undressed seed.

Reduction of spore spread of common bunt (Tilletia tritici) via combining equipment Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Lars; Borgen, Anders.
The disease common bunt (Tilletia tritici syn. T.caries) has become a more frequent problem in Europe during the last 15 year. In organic farming, common bunt causes serious problems for seed producers, and many seed lots are discarded due to contamination with Tilletia tritici. Due to the biology of Tilletia tritici, with spores loosely attached to the surface of the grain, there is a risk that spores can be disseminated via grain handling equipment, including combine harvesters. Preventive efforts should focus on the role of grain handling equipment, and how the fungus life cycle can be broken. We have investigated the dissemination of spores via the combiner after harvesting infected fields. We conducted six trials over three years, counting the number...

Effect of seed treatment with milk powder and mustard flour in control of common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in wheat and stem smut (Urocystis occulta) in rye Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Kristensen, Lars.
In field trials mustard flour was able to control seed borne infection by common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in wheat without decreasing the germination vigour of the treated seeds. Full control of common bunt by coating the seeds with milk powder could only be achieved at doses which reduced germination vigour of the seeds. Mustard flour can be recommended as a seed treatment in organic agriculture while a treatment based on milk powder should be developed in combination with biological control. Both milk powder and mustard flour can be used to control stem smut in rye (Urocystis occulta).

Zusammenhänge zwischen Kalttestwert, Anbauverfahren und Ertragsbildung bei Vermehrungssaatgut von Winterroggen [Correlation between "coldtest" value, production method and yield in winter rye seeds for multiplication] Organic Eprints
Pommer, G; Fuchs, H; Voit, B.

Effect of seed treatment with acetic acid in control of seed borne diseases Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Nielsen, Bent.
In field trials, seed treatment with acetic acid has reduced common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in winter wheat by 91.5-96.2% and by 83% in spring wheat without negative effects on germination vigour of the seeds. Leaf stripe (Pyrenophora graminea) in spring barley was reduced by 93,4%. Acetic acid is a cheap and environmental friendly fungicide with a possible scope of application especially in organic agriculture, where conventional pesticides are prohibited.

Plant genomics – a way forward? Organic Eprints
Beynon, Jim.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Diseases of plants cause significant losses in crop yield and quality. Plants contain a battery of genes whose role is to prevent pathogens invading. Their effective use in crop plants is very important in crop production and especially in chemical free cropping systems. Such genes are introduced into crop varieties by plant breeding. The new science of genomics may enable scientists to recognise all the resistance genes present in a plant. This will eventually allow plant breeders to more precisely and rapidly select useful resistant plants in their breeding programmes. Furthermore, genomics could enable effective deployment of these genes in cropping systems, so providing more durable...

Phytophthora-Resistenz der Kartoffel - Das Wunschmerkmal für den ökologischen Kartoffelbau Organic Eprints
Darsow, Ulrich.

Resistens mod stinkbrand i vinterhvede & resistens mod stribesyge i vårbyg Organic Eprints
Nielsen, B.J..
Danish wheat varieties are tested on a set of different Tilletia populations for their level of resistance. Resistance to bunt is studied by inoculating seeds artificially with different populations of bunt before sowing. 5 g of spores per kg of seeds is used, and the ”isolates” used are selected among the 50-60 different populations of bunt collected from different parts of the country. 2-3 different populations are used for inoculation the first year, and varieties showing good resistance are tested further in the following years on 3-6 new populations. The susceptible variety Herzog (up to 86% attack) and the highly resistant variety Stava (normally 0-0.2% attack) are included every year as reference. In July the number of ears with attacks of bunt is...

Resistenzzüchtung bei der Kartoffel: Beitrag des genetischen Pflanzenschutzes für einen ökologisch verträglichen Kartoffelanbau [Resistance breeding in potato: Contribution of genetic plant protection to ecologically compatible potato growing] Organic Eprints
Darsow, Ulrich.
